Nominating bodies

It is the jury that determines who is entitled to submit nominations. The nominating bodies are assumed to have the broadest and most profound knowledge of authors, illustrators, and activities to promote reading and oral storytelling in their respective countries or regions. The jury and previous laureates also have the right to suggest candidates.

Nominating bodies can be international, national or regional organisations or institutions, such as research institutes connected to children’s literature and projects to encourage reading, children’s book institutes, author and illustrator organisations, children’s departments and literary centres at national libraries.

Organisations wishing to become one of our nominating bodies can apply to the award office before December 1, by sending an email along with a brief description to nomination@alma.se.

Jury with extensive knowledge

Rewarding the highest-quality work demands an expert knowledge of international children’s and YA literature as well as children’s rights and children’s reading. The twelve-member expert jury has the challenging but pleasant task of evaluating some of the world's most prominent candidates each year and selecting a laureate.

Children have the right to great stories

To lose yourself in a story is to find yourself in the grip of an irresistible power. A power that provokes thought, unlocks language and allows the imagination to roam free. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was created in 2002 by the Swedish government to promote every child’s right to great stories.
