Regulations of The Swedish Arts Council
Swedish Arts Council Code of Statutes ISSN 0347-8548, KRFS 2014:1. Pursuant to § 7 of the Ordinance (2002:1091) for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the Swedish Arts Council prescribes the following:
The Jury
1 § The jury for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award shall consist of twelve members. The jury shall together possess broad expertise within the areas of international children’s and young people’s literature, reading promotion, and children’s rights.
2 § The jury members and chairperson are appointed by the Swedish Arts Council. The family of Astrid Lindgren is entitled to propose one member. Jury members are appointed for a four-year term, which may be extended to two further terms of four years each.
If exceptional reasons exist, the Swedish Arts Council may appoint a member who has already served for three terms to serve for a maximum of one additional year.
3 § The jury shall decide the nominees for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and select the laureates. The jury also has the right to set its own rules of procedure or the equivalent administrative rules.
4 § When selecting jury members, the Swedish Arts Council shall take into consideration that the jury must work independently and without regard to outside interests, and that the nature of its task requires great integrity on the part of its members.
5 § Any member wishing to resign from the jury before the end of his or her term shall notify the Swedish Arts Council. The Council will decide upon a replacement for the remaining portion of the term.
6 § The jury forms a quorum when at least eight members are present. When votes are taken, each member has one vote.
7 § Jury members receive a financial remuneration whose amount is determined by the Swedish Arts Council.
The Nomination Process
8 § The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award shall be conferred upon a recipient or recipients who have been nominated by a qualified nominator.
9 § The jury decides which parties shall have the right to nominate (nominators). The jury members have the right to nominate candidates. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award cannot be applied for.
10 § The nominators shall be invited to nominate candidates for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in writing each year. Nominations shall be submitted to the Swedish Arts Council and must arrive no later than 15 May for the award to be given the following. The jury retains the right to leave late nominations without consideration.
Entry into Force
This regulation enters into force on 15 March 2023.

The spirit of Astrid Lindgren
The statutes of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award stipulate that laureates shall be authors, illustrators, storytellers or reading promoters whose work or activity for children and young adults is “of the highest artistic quality” and “conveys the deeply humanistic spirit associated with Astrid Lindgren.”
