Premiere at the book fair

On March 31, 2020, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award struck like a bolt of lightning in the life of the South Korean picture book artist Baek Heena, as she put it herself; "I was so happy, it was like getting a phone call from God." A new Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award film about this year's laureate will be premiered at this year’s digital Gothenburg Book Fair. The film is directed by Lee Young-Hoon. We meet Baek Heena in the city of Seoul where she lives and makes her books. Get a glimpse into her meticulously constructed picture book worlds, what drives her as an artist and what winning the world's largest children's and youth literature prize has meant for her.

A family tale with social passion

The 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award laureate Jacqueline Woodson’s latest novel Red at the Bone follows the journey of a middle-class family from the American South in the 1920s to today’s New York. 16-year-old Melody’s existence has brought together two black families of different classes. The fact that her mother’s teen pregnancy was a catastrophe has been put behind them. The family’s tales are woven together to a story about class and dignity, education and power, parenthood and the relationship between mother and daughter. Jacqueline Woodson is active in the Black Lives Matter movement and has published some 30 books, from novels to poetry and picture books. Racism is a recurring theme in her authorship.
